A Study on the State-Anxiety of the Patients of the planned Abdominal Surgery

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to measure the degree of the preoperative state-anxiety of surgical patients and to understand variables influencing the state-anxiety in order to provide the fundamental data for the effective management of the preoperative anxiety. The subjects of this study were a total of 90 adult patients who were scheduled for abdominal surgery at surgical wards of four hospitals in Kwang-ju city and its adjacent area. The data were gathered from Nov. 12 to Dec. 31, 1984 by means of interview schedule. The data was analized by percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and pearson correlation coefficients.
The results were as follows;
1. The mean score of the preoperative state-anxiety was 42. 6 as the moderate level of the anxiety.
2. The mean score of the preoperative information level(disease, operation, recovery etc.) was 39.9 as moderate level.
3. In the relationship between sex, degree of satisfaction toward the care of family & degree of family dynamics and preoperative state-anxiety, there were significant differences statistically.
1) Significant difference was revealed in accordance with sex; female patients showed the higher state-anxiety than male patients. (t=-2. 69, p- 0.01)
2) Significant difference was revealed in accordance with the degree of satisfaction toward the care of family, the more the degree of satisfaction toward the care of family, the lower the state-anxiety. (F= ;. 17, p<0.05)
3) Significant difference was revealed in accordance with the degree of family dynamics; the more satisfying the degree of family dynamics, the lower the state-anxiety. (F=5.41, p<0.01)
4. Statistically no significant difference was revealed in the correlation between the level of information and of state-anxity before surgery. (r =0.022, p>0.05)
